Words from Tiago Pires (PRT) about his ASP World Tour Rookie Year
...
Tiago Pires, who will turn 27 this summer, has been a leading European surfer for a decade now, and after qualifying for the Dream Tour last year thanks to a 4th place finish on the ASP World Qualifying Series ratings, he has all the potential to remain among the ASP Top 45.

3. What is your plan now?
I went to the Maldives and got another good result for my ASP WQS ranking. I have chosen to attend the biggest WQS events this year to try and secure my ASP Top 45 spot on both tours, and so far it has been a good choice. The WQS offer a different format and you always get to surf more heats in shorter waiting periods which is a very good training, and keeps you fit and focused on your surfing before the main ASP Wolrd Tour stops.

6. What about the ASP Top 45?
It has been an amazing year so far and the level at every event is just crazy. I was sort of expecting a bit more of Andy Irons (HAW); I thought he would be a little bit more psyched to win another world title, but I guess he has been kind of lazy in his heats. I thought he would be the warrior he used to be when he won his three consecutive ASP World titles. Kelly Slater (USA) has been the killer this year, and the excess of confidence has been tearing the others apart. He gets to the places the day before competing while everybody has been there training for a couple days sometimes a week, and wins almost all the time.
7. Next event is the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey's Bay, how do you like it there?
I love Jeffrey's Bay and South Africa in general. I guess if it's turned on it can be mind-blowing with the atmosphere and feeling that are always great there. The wave itself is amazing and I know I can do good on such a righthand pointbreak. I will be really focused!
